Contract Map Cataloger/Archivist needed
Los Angeles Public Library – Roller Map Project
(Fee for service contract)
Have experience working with maps? Have a working knowledge of and experience with metadata? Interested in a contract position at the Los Angeles Public Library? We’re hiring!
Start & End Date: May 15, 2022 – January 15, 2023
Pay: $6,500/month ($52,000/contract duration)
Hours: Full-time (Mon-Fri, Saturdays possible)
Education:
Degree in Library Science; or degree in a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of historic maps; or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Archives background
-Experience working with historical maps
-Experience & familiarity/best practices in the handling of rare materials
-Dublin Core/metadata work experience
-Cataloging experience
-Evidence of successful project management skills
-Proficiency using PC-based applications
-Excellent analytical and problem solving skills combined with attention to detail for complex, detail-oriented work
-Able to work independently, as a team member, and across departmental boundaries in a fast-paced environment
-Friendly, personable and collaborative
Project Goals:
-Assess roller maps for pertinent metadata
-Assist with determining appropriate fields for metadata work in CONTENTdm following Dublin Core
-Create metadata for roller maps for ingest to Tessa via CONTENTdm
-Make recommendations for and work on rehousing roller maps
-Catalog / recatalog maps in OCLC Connexion and our local ILS
-Create an online exhibition
-Work on a capstone project that may involve public programming, blog post, and/or exhibition
-Other map-related projects as assigned by supervisor
