- Be careful with Goo Gone, Goof Off and similar products. They used to be petroleum-derived solvents similar to paint thinner but some at least have now adopted an "environmentally friendly" formula based on citrus oil that leaves a greasy and apparently indelible residue.

- One of the best things for loosening stuck-on stuff is Trisodium phosphate, available as the detergent Alconox. Soaked in a 5% solution overnight, everything detaches from everything else - labels from glass bottles, stickers from folders and so on.

- Acetone (nail-polish remover) works well on most adhesives and hardened latex (which is what rubber bands are), and doesn't damage shells. The same is true of Toluene, available as fiberglass thinner, but it's a bit less safe. Work outdoors with either of those.

External.

Hi, try an ultrasound jewelry cleaner, with the valves submerged in some neutral liquid soap. At the N Shell Museum we received a good collection of small wentletraps that had each been stuck to a board with green plasticine, now dry. Ultrasound helped.
