Thanks, Harry, for your usual thorough examination of another taxonomic conundrum! It is very much appreciated. I will follow your suggestion.
Malacologically yours,
Ron

Dear Ron, Markus
The name Tellina clathrata has been proposed at least
three times
[Deshayes, 1835; Reuss, 1844; and Romer, 1850] as well as
being
misapplied to T. lauta Gould, 1850 by other authors
fide
Higo, Callomon and Goto (1999: 486) in partim [they
apparently
overlooked the Deshayes taxon].
Here are the six taxa in play:
Jactellina Iredale, 1929: 266 Type species
[hereafter TS]
by original designation [OD] Tellina obliquaria
Deshayes,
1853: 356-357; species 180
<
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/96679#page/688/mode/1up>
Type locality, [hereafter TL] Pacific Ocean. Figured by
Reeve (1868: pl.
41, figs. 321a, b
<
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/41303#page/376/mode/1up>
from syntypical material)
Loxoglypta Dall, Bartsch, and Rehder, 1938:
TS [OD]
Tellina obliquilineata Conrad, 1837 TL
Hawaiian Is.Treated
by Kay (1979: 559: pl. 182, figs G, H)
Tellina clathrata (Deshayes in Lamarck,
1835:
208-209
<
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/64099#page/220/mode/1up>;
citing Quoy and Gaimard (1835: pl. 81, fig's 4, 5, 6, 7:
<
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/175181#page/173/mode/1up>)
TL unstated. Couldn't find type material at MNHN, Paris
on-line database.
It's doubtful the TL was anywhere near Japan/Korea; see
itineraries of
l'Astrolabe at
<
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_ship_Astrolabe_%281811%29>.
Tellina lauta Gould, 1850: 252-253
<
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/35741#page/260/mode/1up>
is fairly secure as it was subsequently redescribed and
figured by its
author (Gould, 1852: 408, 409
<
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/41360#page/432/mode/1up>;
pl. 35, fig. 514a, b
<
http://issuu.com/polinecia/docs/by_augustus_a._gould_...___with_an_atlas_of_plates
> [requires a lot of fooling around to produce a
serviceable image]
and Johnson (1961: 99
<
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/33297#page/109/mode/1up>
located the holotype, USNM 5901:
<
http://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?q=Tellina+lauta&tag.cstype=all
>: TL "? Easter Is." However Gould (1862: 79,
246) cited
"Loo Choo" as TL fide Johnson
(Idem).
After a couple of hours of research here's my read:
Tellina clathrata Deshayes, 1835 appears to be a
different
taxon from that identified as Jactellina clathrata
(Deshayes,
1835) by Okutani (2000: 979; pl. 487, fig. 38)
The description, type figure, and TL of Tellina lauta
Gould,
1850 fit the Okutani species well.
This Okutani species is very similar to the TS of
Loxoglypta
as depicted in Kay and rather different from the TS of
Jactellina.as depicted in Reeve.
WoRMS has lots of information, but there are
inconsistencies that
make full reliance on it foolhardy. Try parsing the six taxa
in
boldface!
Short version: Loxoglypta lauta (Gould, 1850) is
a very
defensible working hypothesis for the identity of the
species you
presented.

Hi, everyone!
I am now working on my master's thesis, dealing with the
bivalves of Jeju
Island. A small, moderately common species here has been
referred to by
two names: Loxoglypta [=Jactellina] lauta and L.
clathrata. Some
Korean literature uses "lauta" and Okutani (2000)
uses
"Jactellina clathrata". Both names appear to
refer to the
same species. However, while Habe (1981) treats L. lauta as
a synonym of
L. clathrata, WoRMS accepts both species as valid. Is
there a
tellinid specialist out there who can help me, or anyone who
has any
information on the correct name of this pretty little
tellin? Any
information would be greatly appreciated.
