The superfamily Solenoidea has often been divided into
Solenidae and Cultellidae, with Pharus, Sinovacula, and
other elongate forms placed in Tellinoidea instead.
However, Cosel (1990, C. M. Yonge memorial volume,
Hong Kong U Press) argued that Pharus, Sinovacula, and
allies are close relatives of Cultellus, making Pharidae a
senior synonym of Cultellidae. Relevant DNA data are not
yet available (different genes sequenced for different
genera).
