Dear Aydin, Tom & Sophie and others,
Aydin: In my experience, any organisations likely not to accept credit
cards are usually US-based, as I understand the cost involved in the credit
card setup in the US is prohibitive for non-profit organisations.
Sophie is taking the words right out of my mouth. For five years now, every
year of paying my dues to COA has been nothing short of a herculean effort,
and usually involving the swapping of shells and/or books in return for a
US-based member paying the dues on my behalf (any takers for this year's
dues?). Writing out a US cheque at any bank here costs about $15 (the
overseas membership is only $35!), plus about half an hours' of standing at
the bank counter while the bank employee scuttles about with bits of paper.
Totally out-of-the question for such a small amount!
Let's hope things have changed since I raised this issue with Lynn Scheu
five years ago and the option was rejected. Please Tom, plead with the
president and give it another go. Fellow non-US COA members please write in
support of this issue
Patty
