In one case, finding riprap with fossils may actually prove incredibly
useful. There's a riprapped road cut north of Raymond Washington, with
large pillow basalt boulders. I found out recently that these were
quarried from the old Oakville Quarry, that is at the base of the type
Lincoln Creek Formation at Porter WA. The Quarry no longer produces
fossils - all the fossiliferous material is gone. This quarry's the type
locality of a late Eocene Cypraea, which unfortunately, the type of is
somewhat disintegrated. With the collection of material from this
riprap, we may be lucky and get a few more specimens of this species.
Plus we may get other important material.
