Here are afew handy references on shell people:

van Winkle Palmer, K. 1966. Who were the Sowerbys? Sterkiana 23:1-6 + 1
plate.

Abbott, R.T., and M.E. Young (eds.). 1973. American Malacologists: A
national register of professional and amateur malacologists and private
shell collectors and biographies of early American mollusk workers born
between 1618 and 1900. American Malacologists, Falls Church, Virginia.
Consolidated/Drake Press, Philadelphia. 494 pp.

Abbott, R.T. (ed.). 1975. American Malacologists: A national register of
professional and amateur malacologists and private shell collectors. 1975
Supplement. American Malacologists, Greenville, Delaware. Economy
Printing, Easton, Maryland. 495-609. (pagination continued from first
edition).

I also have 80+ citations of obituaries or biographies of freshwater shell
people. Art Bogan I and I are going to try to include these references in
a review paper on freshwater mussel taxonomy and the literature (submitted
to the Journal of the North American Benthological Society) but I don't
know if it will fly. I can provide the references on request.
