Jim,

We live in Hawaii and do a lot of collecting. Beach collecting is minimal in Hawaii except after storms, when there is a little more. The exception to this is that we have a lot of success collecting micros in the high tide drift lines. Unfortunately, this is less so on the Big Island.

Some other calm water places for snorkeling on the Big Island besides two-step:

Mahukona on Highway 270 on the northwest tip of the island, about 13 miles from the junction of highways 270 and 90. You park on the old concrete pier and enter the water on a ladder. It is usually very calm. However, be forewarned that occasionally there are waves that make the entry/exit dangerous. It is nearly deserted on weekdays and heavily used by locals on weekends.

The small beach at mile marker 4 on Ali'I Drive south of Kailua is another good place to snorkel. It can be very calm.

Kahalu'u Beach Park is also a good choice, just a little farther down the road (mile marker 4.8 on Ali'I Drive.

Good luck!

Jim
We just returned from Hawai'i Wednesday and snorkeled everywhere. 2 step beach was by far the best for fish and shells, it is called Pae'a in Honaunau Bay. Parking is only $5 or park for free at State Park next door which is well worth the time also.
Cheers
Rick

Linda and I have a week on the big island of Hawaii starting today and would like advice on beaches to shell on.
This could be beach walking or calm water snorkeling. As we are both in our seventies please rule out any beaches that require repelling down a cliff to reach them.

Hope to see you all at the COA Convention.

Jim Brunner
