Dear James,
I have had some success scanning odd shaped shells by using a wax
made for sticking down little things in dollhouses. It is non-staining
and will hold a fairly heavy shell. You can purchase it at any good
miniature supplies place. I stick them to the lid of a box, and then put
the box over the scanner. That way, you get a veiw of the pointed top of
the shell and the bottom can be just sat on the scanner bed and covered
with a black towel to keep out extra light. Sometimes I also put a peice
of contrasting colored paper over them and then the towel. A black
t-shirt would work just as well.
