Land snails in NY State

Dear Conch-Lers,

With Spring Break upon us, I have been coralled by my 17 year old
daughter to look at colleges on the East Coast.  We will be in NY City
for a few days, Ithaca, NY and Washington DC.  I plan to drive from NY
City to Ithaca and, possibly to Washington as well.

Are there any suggestions for collecting land snails along the way?  How
about fossils?

I am leaving in a few days so any prompt suggestions are most
appreciated.
