In a somewhat belated response to the shells as tools topic, I thought I
would add a reference:

Spirals From the Sea by Jane Fearer Safer and Frances McLaughlin Gil, 1982,
Clarkson N. Potter, Inc, New York. This "coffee table" stle book was
published in coordination with a shell display at the American Museum of
Natural History. The book includes shells as decoration, tools, money,
religion, etc. It is superbly illustrated and pretty much covers the
subject from A to Z.
