Linda,

The illustrated shell you refer to is Ancilla lienardi.

A. glabrata tends to be less inflated with a more sloping shoulder line
(immediately evident when making a side-by-side comparison of the posterior
end of the aperture of both species), the groove on the body whorl is less
defined, and the umbilicus is not as open as in A. lienardi. Color can be
deceiving too -- both species tend to vary in color from orange to white
and shades inbetween. Grant it, both species are very similar and slender
specimens of A. lienardi tend to mimic A. glabrata, and vice versa. Check
the links below for images of A. lienardi and glabrata.

Subject: Ancilla glabrata and lienardi

Hi, CONCH-Lers!

Will somebody please look at ebay item #2224242075 and tell me if it is
indeed lienardi. I've been trying to identify two that I have in hand.
One I have is roughly the same size as the one on ebay, is pretty heavy for
its size, etc. The only difference seems to be that the spire is a bit
higher in proportion - this might make it glabrata.

I guess I might have to bring all three that I have to COA and get someone
to give me the correct i.d. Some one of these days I'm going to have to
get a better scanner or a digital camera.

Thanks,
Linda
