Katherine Cordy's message presented an opportunity for me to repeat my
periodic rant/plea to urge Conch-L subscribers to use plain text format
for their messages. I have included a greatly shortened, edited
quotation from her message as an example. I would much prefer to read
informative messages about shells (including Katherine's) without having
to wade through endless lines of formatting commands. :)

The quotation below shows how your messages appear in the Conch-L digest
when you use HTML or even worse Microsoft Word as an editor for your
e-mail messages. You can see that the bulk of the message consists of
formatting commands rather than useful text. For those of us who
subscribe to Conch-L in Digest format, such messages are much more
difficult to read. For those in foreign countries whose ISP's charge
for actual usage, such messages cause them added expense. The simple
solution is using plain text format for messages to the list. That
option is available in all e-mail programs. It would require a very
large message in plain text to exceed the list's size limit.

Please do not view my message as a criticism of Katherine or any other
member of the list, as I appreciate the contributions all of you make to
  further our knowledge of conchology.
