The "beach" restriction makes a lot of sense to me.  My list of alleged "New
England" shells that I've never found looks a lot like the one Kevin posted.
I do most of my N.E. collecting by walking the beaches and sieving drift.
The water's usually too cold and/or too murky for snorkeling, and I'm too
introverted to chat up the scallopers. :-)

The geographical restriction doesn't make ecological sense, but it does fit
the definition of "New England", and when you compile a regional list of
shells you have to draw the line somewhere.  It's a shame, because in my
experience the collecting is better at St. Andrews, N.B., than on the U.S.
side of the river.
