Dear Alex,
The coast around the city of Rio consists mostly of open, high-energy
beaches interrupted by big rocks (think Sugar Loaf). Unless you are willing
to snorkel, there is not much available on the city's sandy beaches. I just
returned from a 10-day visit (I am originally from Rio); as expected, the
water was cool (around 66 F), and the surf relatively intense. We collected
a large number of valves of Donax hanleyanus (the local coquina) on the
sandy beach at Barra da Tijuca. For more tropical habitats and
coral-associated species I suggest the beaches of Cabo Frio and Arraial do
Cabo, about 1.5 hour east of Rio.
Cheers,
José
