They could help you avoid encounters with skunks, bears, security
guards, or other warm-blooded organisms, but mollusks are generally the
same temperature as the background and so won't show up with infrared
vision goggles.

On the other hand, you could set them down outdoors for several days
and then check and see if any snails were living under them.  Wood or
rocks probably work better, though.
