John,
Different species live in different habitats.
I have never dived in the Caribbean, but in the Indopacific many smaller
species can be found under rocks and rubble. Some cones and olives and
terebras can be found by fanning the sand or looking for tracks and
following to the end. Caves and overhangs are often good with a torch and
night dives too - especially just around sunset as many species are on the
move then. I often find that the commercial dive sites are a waste of time
shell wise as live coral has a relatively low number of species
