Shireen,
I have collected extensively at Calvert Cliffs. I use a resin called
Butvar-76 as a consolidant and adhesive when working with shells, both
recent and fossil. Butvar is soluble in acetone and dries clear. A
thick( concentrated) solution can be used as an adhesive while a dilute
solution can be used as a consolidant...something that hardens the shell.
The reason I like using Butvar is that it can be removed if necessary. By
placing the specimen back into acetone, the Butvar is dissolved and by
using several changes of acetone, you can remove virtually all of the
Butvar. The main drawback is the flammability ofthe acetone. Acetone is
also a respiratory depressant and must be used in a well ventilated space.
Butvar is not easy to find. A Florida fossil group is where I bought mine
from. If you are interested let me know and I should be able to dig up
their address.
