The following is a paste from the Smithsonian which i hope we all would
consider great news.

Debuting in September 2008, the Ocean Web Portal will comprise the online
arm of the Smithsonian's Ocean Initiative - a partnership with the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The Ocean Initiative is the Smithsonian's most ambitious effort to date,
involving collaborators from such influential marine science institutions as
the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research
Institute, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and will also
include a new, permanent exhibit, the Ocean Hall, at the National Museum of
Natural History.

The Ocean Initiative aims to increase ocean literacy, or, the "understanding
of the ocean's influence on you - and your influence on the ocean." (Ocean
Literacy: The Essential Principles of Ocean Science).

Our goal for the Portal is to support this mission by reaching far beyond
the walls of the Museum, extending the exhibition's impact on the public,
students, scientists, conservationists, and policymakers.

There is a survey which can be taken to provide input on the exhibit and
portal. I encourage all who can to take the survey.
