Ok, for the SIU alumni lurking in the Conch-L world, I received my
undergraduate degree from SIU and my first graduate school there also. For
all the rest, you will enjoy a wonderful academic setting in the rolling
hills of southern Illinois at a wonderful time of the year. I plan to go
and this would be a great opportunity for those of you who may have even a
passing interest in the freshwater and land fauna of that great state to
also attend. (Full and fair disclosure: my SIU degree was from
Edwardsville, but SIU nonetheless). Also so most of you don't have to look
it up: Salukis?-they are very thin racing dogs favored by ancient Egyptians-
that breed is the mascot of SIU. Why Egypt? Southern Illinois reminded the
first Caucasian settlers of that region in the late 1700's of ancient Egypt,
that is why the most southerly Illinois city is named Cairo (in Illinoisan
pronounced care-row, like Karo syrup) and Thebes is close by.
And you are what (80-100miles?) from New Harmony, Indiana that communal
experiment in the early 1800's where Thomas Say lived and worked and named
shells. A nice community but as I remember you have to go up or downstream
from the Wabash to find shells. Never found any shells at the falls of the
Wabash either, although that is also a historic collecting location.

Wow-you will enjoy the AMS and hope to see a lot of you there. Hope Bob and
Betty Lipe will also make a sentimental journey to their alma mater.

Happy that NASA brought me to live in Merritt Island, Florida, but I often
think of the Prairie State.
