I think there may be some historical confusion as to the proper stem
for a family name based on Pleurocera, such that Pleuroceratidae was
intended as a corrected spelling of Pleuroceridae rather than as a
name based on Pleuroceras. Rafinesque did not follow strict Greek and
Latin when making his genera, leading to confusion when later writers
tried to treat them as such. Seems like someone, perhaps Morrison
(1954), discussed this in print. I find a few papers in a Google
search that use for Pleuroceratidae for Pleuroceridae, including some
by Pilsbry.

In fact, the DNA data tend to suggest that freshwater forms have
evolved more than once from marine ancestors in the Cerithioidea.
Molecular sampling of many families isn't as good as would be
desirable, but that wouldn't be too surprising in light of the many
different brackish-water forms.
