I will need to check details, as I am en route back from the
freshwater mollusk conservation meeting, but the remants of Truman
Aldrich's collections at Alabama contain not only much Webb material
(I think Aldrich ordered the "one of everything on the West Coast of
North America" special) but also a number of poorly documented
specimens from a large collection that was sold by an emporium in
Philadelphia-I don't have collector or emporium names handy just now.
There's not a date associated with the emporium collection that I
recall, but perhaps someone will recognize a name.

Timothy Conrad was commissioned to travel to Alabama and collect
shells, sending material back to Philadelphia, in the 1830's, but this
wasn't exactly offering shells for sale to the general public.  I
think Rafinesque sold some material to Poulson, but that may have been
reflecting a lack of funds rather than regular practice on his part.
