Dear Dick and Kovalis,

You make it sound easy, Dick. Eventually I'll
learn to go to Sherborn and "2400 years" first!

I have a feeling that the type figures of S.
lamarckii Chenu are those depicting the (one?)
specimen in figs. 4, 4a, and 4b on plate 9: "S. Ducalis var. b".

Do Finet and Lamprell restrict it thus?

Dick, since you have no. (2) below - and maybe no
(3), can you refine my putative no. (1)?

Harry

(1) Chenu, J.-C., "1842." Illustrations
conchyliologiques ou description et figures de
toutes les coquilles connues vivantes et
fossiles, classées suivant le système de Lamarck modifié
d'après les progrès de la science et
comprenant les genres nouveaux et les espèces
rècemment découvertes. Tome 2. Fortin, Masson,
Langlois, and Leclercq, Paris.
[Spondylus: more than 5 pp; plates 1-32, captions date(s)?]
(2) Finet, Y. and K. Lamprell, 2008. The
Spondylidae in the historical collections of the
Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle, Geneva, with
revision of the species described by Lamarck and
Chenu, and notes on nomenclature. Archiv
für Molluskenkunde 137(1): 1-73, incl. 30 pls.
(3) Sherborn, C.D. and E.A Smith, 1911. A
collation of J. C. Chenu’s Illustrations
Conchyliologiques and a note on P. L. Duclos’
Histoire gen. et part. coquilles. Proceedings of
the Malacological Society of London 9(4): 264-267.

Thanks,
Harry
