This isn't exactly shells, but I ran across a strand of pearls at
auction on eBay (my husband buys shell stamps there often). They were
offered by someone who offers estate and antique jewelry. They were so
exceptional, I can't get them off my mind, and wondered if there is a
pearl lover on Conch-L.

They were offered at $4,800 but did not sell, so I feel sure the seller
still has them. The description: FG92002 BEAUTIFUL NATURAL SOUTH SEA
PEARLS 34" IN LENGTH WITH 14k GOLD SWIRL CLASP APPROX 9.5MM - 11.5MM
BUYER PAYS SHIPPING AND ALL MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED. APPROX.
APPRAISAL VALUE AT $11,000.00.

I was told by my jeweler that his Mikato representative told him that
the reason (cultured) pearls are rising in price so fast is that some
virus wiped out the oyster population near Japan and it will take
several years to recover, and they are going to be very scarce shortly.
Anyone know the story on this?

At any rate the photo of them is beautiful. I can't justify them for
myself, but hate to seem them go to someone who only wants them for
decoration. I can put you in touch with the person selling them.
E-mail me direct at: [log in to unmask], if you are interested.
