I think just like army ants :-)

Make a deep trench of multi-layer material and in it catch rain water and
have it auto fill if not - electrify the trench and be sure all weeds and
trees are cleared any falling distance away from the trench.

Then Birds tote them out.

We had some Snowy white egrets visit and bring duck weed and a small snail.
They wander in puddles and look for food, dragging and stepping snares
all sorts of material.

This time it isn't from within them, it is from their outer selves.

I think, like tropical fish, snakes, and the like, tanks are the only way.
