Sylvia,

One of our Conch-L group (I think it was Jr. Powers or maybe Mark Bethke) uses
glycerin. He (which ever one it was) advised me to use glycerin on a shell
where I wanted to keep the periostracum and it was one of those thin ones that
was flaking off. I used a little silicone and then some glycerin and it seems
to have really helped. That was about six months ago and the periostracum
stills seems dark and has quit flaking off at the slightest touch.
