Regarding making labels I would recommend purchasing some acid free card
stock, about the weight of a regular index card, and print them on this.
Use either a dot matrix printer ( I got mine for free from a friend who
didn't want it any more, thank you Scott and Allison ) or a laser printer
(more expensive).  The inks in most ink jet and bubble jet printers are
not permanent or solvent resistant.
