Dear All,

I received a strombus the other day I can not identify using Abbott and
Dance's "Compendium, Eisenberg's "Collector's Guide...", or Walls'
"Conchs, Tibias, and Harps" (how come harps, by the way?). It is from
an old collection with no (of course) data. It looks like S. costatus
on the dorsal side except it has very definite spiral ridges. It is a
mature specimen, 128 mm in length, very small shoulder knobs, a tall
spire like S. costatus, a flaring lip like S. thersites, and a huge
tooth(?) on the posterior end of the parietal wall. If anyone thinks
they may have an idea here, or just want to see it out of morbid
curiosity, please write to me off line and I will send you a scanned
image of this guy. If you get this one I have another oddball strombus
that looks like a variant of S. tricornus.
