Well, actually, you've all got it wrong. What happened was that Captain
Cook landed on these new islands and was met on the beach by the king
whose name was Kaui-Maui. While exchanging greetings on the beach in a
mutual tongue (Japanese), Cook noticed that each time the waves
subsided, little shells popped up and went as far as they could down the
slope. The king explained that the mollusks (Coquina) did so to escape
the evil sand witch which rises from below to devour those who waste too
much time on her sands without buying anything. Cook bought two Leis,
bestowing one on his staff entertainer. That, of course became the "Lei
of the Last Minstrel".
