Solander was Joseph Banks assistant on the Cooks voyagers, many of the
shells collected in those voyagers finished up in the collection of the
Duchess of Portland, a collector of note in those days. Solander was
engaged to name and curate this collection by this Lady, unfortunately,
although he had apparently completed this work, had not published on it
as was part of his contract up to the time of his death.
The Rev. John Lightfoot was appointed to draw up a sales catalogue of
the shells in the Duchess's collection on her demise. This Catalogue
validated many of Solanders shells which were non binomial having not
been described by Solander.
