The Kuril Islands are located just above Japan on the western side of the
Pacific. They stretch from just north of Hokkaida (Japan) to the Kamtschatka
Peninsula. (Russia). The island chain is about 30 islands long, about 750
miles in length, and are claimed by both Japan and Russia. Onekotan is the
third island from the Kamtschatka Peninusula (the northernmost boundry of the
chain) and lies at about 50.5 degrees north.
