>One of the members of the Boston Malacological Society showed a book he
had
discovered, "The Algorithmic Beauty of Sea Shells (Virtual Laboratory)" by
Hans Meinhardt.  The book discusses not WHY shell have their patterns but 
HOW these patterns might be generated.<
 
I had the pleasure to hear Prof. Meinhardt when he gave a talk in the
Stuttgart Museum of Natural History and was very impressed by the theories
he developed. I have the book and can only recommend it to anyone
interested in the question of how the various patterns on shells are
generated!
