Hello shall collect dues,
Many know Charles Darwin for his theory of evolution as discussed in "On the Origin of Species" (1859), but not as many know him as a leading earthworm scientist. Darwin was so enthralled by these critters that he dedicated 44 years worth of studies to them, culminating in his final scientific publication, "The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms, with Observations on their Habits". The text is riddled with several humorous experiments, but some of the most bizarre were his tests to prove earthworms are deaf. To demonstrate this, Darwin exposed a pot of earthworms to a series of abrasive sounds, including a metal whistle, a bassoon, and banging on a piano. Yet beneath these ridiculous procedures is Darwin's foresight on the importance of these tiny creatures, which have since been recognized as one of the world's most important "ecosystem engineers."
