Hi Phil - welcome aboard, albeit belatedly.
Consider yourself lucky.  There is a fellow in rural British Columbia
who has supplied me with nice shells from that area over the years,
who reports that he used to do his shell cleaning in the back yard
(to avoid smelling up the house), but the bears used to come and take
them.  So now he has moved the operation indoors.
