Joyce,
Most of the remaining populations of native Partulina on Maui are at
high elevations on gated private land on the West Maui side. I've
been at the top and filmed some of the static shells attached to the
leaves of Ohia trees; no crawling activity at all. Some populations
still remain on the wet slopes of Haleakala, but are very difficult
to find access. Likewise for the ground dwelling native species
along the coastal areas; almost all that you will find are very small
dead specimens under rocks. As Pete says, for land shells you
probably only have the introduced Achatina fulica, to feature on your
video, and also an occasional Euglandina rosea! For marine shells I
would suggest snorkeling or diving the inside of Molokini crater, but
no collecting is allowed here. South of Kihei is La Perouse
Point. There is some shore entry areas, but the best access is by
boat. We found some nice common species in shallow snorkeling and
diving depths. Have fun.
Regards,
Rich
