One thing that contributed to the fall of the Passenger Pigeon was that
they flew in tremendous groups---millions in a flight---and only a few
flights. You could point a gun in a generally up position, fire, and you
couldn't miss. Ordinary pigeons, however, are everywhere there is a
statue that needs tending, a park that needs minding, or an underpass
that requires tenants.
Martha the last of the Passenger Pigeons died at our Cincinnati Zoo. We
have a statue of her---but it aint the same.
