Hi Paul,
The techniques, processes, and tools/equipment used in photographing
seashells are the same as those used a variety of scientific photography
methods. The best general resource for information (in my opinion) is
the outstanding volume entitled “Digital Photography for Science:
Close-up Photography, Macrophotography, and Photomacrography” by Enrico
Savazzi, 2011. I have owned and used this reference since it was first
available and find it invaluable in its help to image seashells. The
author is a now retired palaeobiologist and has authored several papers
on fossils as well as seashells, often using examples of his
photographing experience in the publication. Another book that I have
found to be of great use is "Photographing minerals, fossils, and
lapidary arts" by Jeffrey Scovil, 1996. Jeff is a world renowned
photographer of mineral specimens and other hard to photograph
materials, and freely shares his knowledge and techniques not only in
the book but at seminars and symposiums around the world. In our modern
and highly connected world there are a large variety of sources online
that discuss various photographic methods and I find that to be another
valuable resource. In my exploration of imaging shells I have personally
experimented with and have had success with close-up photography,
macrophotography, photomicrography, reflected UV-IR photography, image
stacking, and fluorescence imaging. The above mentioned books and
resources were used for both information and inspiration. At the COA
convention next year in San Diego I will be giving a talk about
photographing seashells, perhaps you can attend.
Cheers,
Randy Bridges
