The picture shows a post-larval shell of Cymatium sp. This is the shell just
after the metamorphosis from the pelagic, plankton-feeding stage to the
adult crawling stage. On the right-hand view one can clearly see the line of
transition between the smooth larval shell, or protoconch, and the
ornamented adult shell, or teleoconch. If you have growth series of the
local species of Cymatium triton shells you may be able to determine the
species. Characteristic is the spiral yellow band on the middle of the last
whorl. Great pictures!
