I am sorry to say there is no definitive way to clean Cassis tuberosa once the animal started to
rotten....

I once received a large lot of these shells, some were very ugly outside, not usable and were
stinking like hell. I made a large hole on the top to see why the animal could not be removed. Due
to its shape it is impossible to flush out the animal, and it turns into a dense mass which was not
flushed away not even when I used a hose directly into it.

You can try to leave pure alcohol inside for one week, drain and fill again. Do this for several
weeks and eventually the smell will not be so strong.

I was able to clean my Cassis tuberosa by researching the archives on conch-l, which is
extremely helpful. However, there is part of the animal left that I am unable to reach. I can't see
but when I shake it, I can hear it rattling inside and of course there is the smell. I live in an
apartment building and burying it is not an option. I don't have any ultrasonic cleaning tools. I
did read somewhere that if you leave the animal in water for a few days it will rot and make it
easier to clean. Is this true? Please help me. This is my first, I would love to put it on
display. Thanks in advance,
