Penion mandarina is a synonym of P. sulcatus (Lamarck 19xx). I can't
remember whether it was described from an Aussie or NZ specimen. It
is definitely in Buccininae, not Fasciolariinae. P. waitei is an
Aussie endemic. On shell characters I think it belongs in Penion,
which has a number of synonyms eg Verconella. The genus goes back
into the early Paleocene of NZ, when it was just a wee thing at most
25mm long. Over time the genus developed a large blunt protoconch;
older species had a small one.
