This is all set out in detail in our book on molluscan phylogeny published
last year. See http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/10802.php

Is the chiton's multi-valved state the plesiomorphic one for gastropods? I'm
not being glib. I honestly have no idea what the latest thinking is for
mollusks. I'm such a newbie and I got derailed into insects (and I just took
an ichthyology class that rocked my world. I am such a taxa slut!)

I barely had a handle on HAM. Without a hint of snarkiness, I implore,
enlighten me. I dig this stuff the mostest, but am only just now beginning
to actually grok it.
