CET still has one $1200 scholarship to award for the Jewish Studies in
Prague summer program. The summer program and scholarship deadline has
been extended to May 1. Applications for fall are also due by May 1,
and there is additional scholarship aid available for that term.

The 8-week summer program features courses in the Jewish History of
Central and Eastern Europe, the Holocaust, Politics and Culture, and
Czech language, as well as a 10-day study trip to Poland to learn about
the Jewish experience there. Students will also participate in several
other trips, a community service project, film screenings, many
activities, and special guest lectures this summer by Arnost Lustig and
Helen Epstein.

The seminar in intercultural communication serves two basic goals: (1) a
graduate-level survey of research and theory that bears on communication
within and between cultural groups, and (2) an opportunity to explore in
depth some specific foci of interest pertaining to communication across
cultures. In the spirit of seminar, all efforts will be made to tailor
the course to needs and interests of seminar members.
Seminar members will prepare and present common and individual readings.
Members can also expect to write and present some brief, relatively
speculative reports ["heuristic interviews and observations"]. Each
will also conduct a more rigorous group or individual research project
pertaining to one of the special foci.
Potential textbooks include Handbook of International and Intercultural
Communication [W. Gudykunst & B. Moody, eds., Sage, 2001]; The
Ethnography of Communication [M. Saville-Troike, Blackwell, 2003]. One
or two additional readings per week should also be expected.

UGA Experience
The Student Government Association is currently working on a project
through the Academic Affairs Committee that will serve as an extension
of such programs as Freshman Orientation and Dawg Camp. UGA Experience
will be offered to incoming freshmen as an eight week, one hour course
this upcoming fall. The goal of this course is to ensure that freshmen
are fully acclimated to the University and realize all it has to offer.
Study abroad is a large part of college and the UGA experience.
Therefore, SGA is hoping to focus one of the class sessions on the study
abroad programs available through the University. To effectively inform
students, SGA needs your help. They are looking for students who have
previously studied abroad, and who would be willing to speak with these

Magazine Submissions
Abroad View is now reviewing all submissions for its Fall 2003 magazine.
They invite students to submit their articles. For submissions

Abroad View encourages study abroad students to e-mail us with their own
e-mails, journal entries, or articles about their experiences and
thoughts as Americans overseas. They will publish a feature section with
students’ viewpoints.
The Fall 2003 issue of Abroad View will also highlight the cultural
learning experiences of students who have studied in countries such as
England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Wales,
English-speaking Canada, etc. The theme of the main section will be,
"Subtle Differences: Cultural Learning in Countries that Feel Like
Home." The magazine wants to know why students choose these destinations
and how students delve into these seemingly similar cultures and learn
about the subtle (or perhaps not-so-subtle) differences between them and
the U.S.
Articles and photos must be submitted to Abroad View by May 19, 2003.
