The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum collection houses a shell of Busycon
sinistrum Hollister, 1958 that measures 413.5 mm (the name B. contrarium
(Conrad, 1840) represents a fossil species from the Miocene (?Pliocene) of
North Carolina). Anyway, the shell is magnificent and was live-collected by
scallop boats at 40 m depth off Carrabelle Beach on the coast of the
Florida Panhandle. This still "unofficial" record shell was kindly donated
to the Shell Museum by Al and Bev Deynzer of Sanibel. Any challenger?
