Paul may need a cold shower. Lati- means wide. Pennis is a derivative of
pinnis, pinna - a feather. Latipennis probably means wide feather, in
reference to its overall shape and structure. Other examples, which refer to
feather, are Plautus impennis (Great auk) and Dryopteris pennigera (a fern).
But I like Paul's interpretation.
