I don't know how easy it would be to get to different places without a
car, but there are several beaches worth visiting if you can get
there.  Less heavily modified areas, such as state parks, are
generally better than heavily commercial beaches, for which the
shelling tends to reflect the source of dredge sand.  Edisto Island
and Hunting Island are a couple of nearby coastal state parks.

Late March might be early enough to have relatively few people running
around on the beaches, though the Canadians tend to be out in SC in
swimsuits starting about February.

There are also assorted freshwater and land snails in the area, and a
wide range of Eocene to Pleistocene fossils.
