I was told by a former fisherman in Ocean City MD that they trap Busycon
canaliculatum, harvest the meat and send it south. There is a name change
somewhere in North Carolina and becomes known as canned conch meat. The meat
is then used for Conch fritters in florida because the meat is cheaper and
tastes just about the same. Since I can't eat shellfish, I really wouldn't
know.
