Hello Ron,
Personally I most often use my flatbed scanner: I put the shells on the
glass and with the lid fully open I make scans without any light in
theroom, by night is the best and I get a jet black background . Most
ususually the automatic colour setting works perfectly. This method canot
work with cowries as they roll on the glass but usually it is easy to
scaboth sides of a shell, most usually. With a camera I use black
cardboard or black felt and I also use a 6 LEDs ringlight mounted on the
lens without any other light in the room.

I am preparing some color photos for a paper.  I am using Photoshop and
need a black background for the specimens but I don't know how to achieve
