     The surprise
 is the naming of the
protoconch.  Juvenile Nerita albicilla were named
 Nerita fasciata;
understandable because they do differ from the adult,
 but naming a
protoconch.  What a great story and the illustrations
 on youir web
page are exquisite.  One look and you can easily see
 how the
       mistake came about (http://www.jaxshells.org/martinia.htm).
       Thanks for sharing,

       Dear Carole,

This is an important topic! Thanks for bringing it up
 in this
       forum.

Tom has already set the record straight on much of
 this.

What may be a surprise to some Conch-L'ers is that
 WoRMS
       <
 http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=476533
       >, based on "personal communication" from
 Alan Beu (2010),
       synonymized the amphi-Atlantic Monoplex
 martinianus
       (d'Orbigny,
       1841) with M. pilearis (Linnaeus, 1758) [type
 locality.
       Despite
opinions to the contrary (e.g., Abbott, 1974), for
 decades Beu
steadfastly separated the two until he reached the
 point in his
extensive, nay, global, museum work that he wrote
 "the distinction
between specimens resembling M. pilearis and
 M.
         martinianus
is not clear-cut and not supportable" (Beu, 2010:
 170)

While typical specimens of M. p., e.g., from
 the
       Philippines and
       M. m., say, from Florida have always appeared
 distinct in
       my
(proportionately meager) experience, I'll yield to
 the expert on
       their
conchological affinity - but how about affording our
 Atlantic
       taxon
subspecies status? Lee (2009: 83) gave distinguishing
       characters.

Beu and many others, e.g., Lee (2009: 82-83), have
 unequivocally
       separated M. p. from M. aquatilis so
       "pileare was changed to
 aquatile"
is certainly not a mainstream opinion - and one
 I find
       indefensible. Likewise M. macrodon is
 not
       synonymous with
       M. pilearis; these WoRMS citations are based on
 historic
misidentifications. Although confused by many authors
 over the
       years,
both species are recorded from NE Florida
       <
         http://jaxshells.org/marine.htm> and Peanut
 Island
       <
         http://jaxshells.org/peanut.htm>, to which
 inventory
       you've made
       prodigious contributions.

There is more to the quirky taxonomy of the topical
 species at
       <
         http://www.jaxshells.org/martinia.htm>.

       Hi conch-L Seems with
         all the
facebook and other sites, we have been very quiet.
 Hoping there
         is still
someone tuned in. Went to access Cymatium pileare,
 it is listed
         in WoRMS
as Monoplex macrodon (Valenciennes, 1832) with a
 reference by
         Gary
Rosenberg, but I cannot find any other information
 on this. Does
         anyone
have the paper. It is probably pretty recent as last
 I had any
         information, pileare was
 changed to
           aquatile.

Can anyone shed any light on this.

          Thank you,
