Dear Patty,

we have in Europe 9 species of the genus Patella.

the patelliform genera arised from the genus PATELLA Linnaues, 1758, Gloria
Maris, 1991, Antwerpen, 30(5-6): 69-145 (= 1-76)]

Patella (Patella) vulgata LINNAEUS 1758,
East-Atlantic, from northern Norway south to South-Portugal (not in the
Mediterranean).

Patella (Patella) ulyssiponensis GMELIN 1791,
East Atlantic, from the British Isles into the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
CHRISTIAENS considered the following subspecies:
Patella ulyssiponensis athletica BEAN 1844 (Norway, locate near Stavanger
and Bergen; west coast of the British Isles; Irlande; France.
Patella ulyssiponensis aspera ROEDING 1798 (Madeira, Canaries [Syn. P. lowei
D'ORBIGNY 1840], Azores] - also as Synonym (nomen dubium.
Patella ulyssiponensis bonardii PAYRAUDEAU 1826 (the most common form in the
Mediterranean.
Patella ulyssiponensis pontica MONTEROSATO 1888 (Black Sea, Bulgarian and
Russian coasts.
Patella ulyssiponensis deserta CHRISTIAENS 1973 (Isles Deserta,
Madeira-archipelago)

Patella (Patella) intermedia MURRAY 1857,
Synonym: P. depressa PENNANT 1777, but this is uncertain,
East-Atlantic, from the est coast of the British Isles, the English Channel
as to Gibraltar and the West African coast south to Senegal.

Patella (Patella) caerulea LINNAEUS 1758
Synonyms: P scutellaris BLAINVILLE 1825; P. subplana POTIEZ & MICHAUD 1838;
P. fragilis PHILIPPI 1836; P. grisea RISSO 1826 and many more.
Limited to the Mediterranean.

Patella (Patella) candei D'ORBIGNY 1840
Limited to the archipelagos of southern Europe: Selvagens (form candei
D'ORBIGNY 1840), Canaries (form crenata D'ORBIGNY 1840), Madeira (form
ordinaria MABILLE 1888), Azores (form gomesii DROUET 1858).

Patella (Patella)ferruginea GMELIN 1791
Synonym: P. barbara PETIT DE LA SAUSSAYE 1869 (non LINNAEUS 1758).
Limited to the south-western part of the Mediterranean.

Patella (Laevipatella) nigra (DA COSTA 1771)
Synonym: P. safiana LAMARCK 1819,
In the Mediterranean Algeria, between Oran and Tangiers. Along the West
African coast from Marocco to Angola.

Patella (Patellastra) piperata GOULD 1846
From Madeira and the Canaries south to Senegal.

Patella (Patellastra) rustica LINNAEUS 1758
Synonym: P. lusitanica GMELIN 1791
Common in the Mediterranean, in the Atlantic South-Portugal, France north to
Biarritz.
