And the new layer of sand can hide most anything.

Nice part of a surge - if something can be  nice-  is deeper water 
shells are swept towards
the beach and on/in the beach.  I liked to skin dive after a storm that 
brought waves and surges
for that.  60' habitat in 20-30' sand layer.
